The Urban Freight Lab is a key technical and research partner on the Miami-Dade County SMART Curbs Program, collaborating with the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), Cityfi, Urban Health Partnerships, Automotus, Blue Systems, INRIX, and the Miami Parking Authority. Based in Downtown Miami and Brickell, this work is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s SMART (Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation) grant, which supports efforts to build safer, more efficient, and sustainable urban transportation systems nationwide.

Selected from 392 applications nationwide, this project is part of a broader multi-city effort to build safer, more equitable, and more sustainable freight systems by leveraging innovative technology and data.

The program focuses on improving curb management, enhancing bike lane safety, and advancing zero-emission last-mile delivery solutions through technology, data, and community input. Our work uses comprehensive data analytics and community engagement to support the development of a more sustainable urban freight network.

As the technical and research partner, the Urban Freight Lab is involved in shaping the pilot design to ensure it meets the practical needs of freight operations and industry. We are also developing evaluation frameworks to monitor progress, as well as facilitating knowledge sharing among cities in the national SMART cohort to promote scalable, effective solutions.

Our work supports Miami-Dade County’s goals for safer, cleaner, and more equitable transportation. By improving curbside management and freight delivery in Miami, we’re helping create a model that other cities can adapt to promote sustainability and efficiency.
