December 15, 2021 — The Master of Supply Chain Transportation & Logistics program (MSCTL) has awarded Caryn Livingston (MSCTL ’23) a SCTL Scholarship, selected from this year’s incoming students to receive $5,000 towards tuition expenses.
Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Livingston earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Tulsa, and a Master of Arts in Literature from the University of Houston – Clear Lake. She has worked as a reporter covering energy issues for Hart Energy and Argus Media and now works as the editor and airfreight reporter for the Air Cargo World and Cargo Facts publications. After she completes her Master’s degree, she plans to join a forward-thinking transportation or third-party logistics company in a role developing new supply chain solutions or customized services.
We connected with Livingston to discuss the award and enrolling in the program.
SCTL: How did you decide to apply for the Supply Chain Transportation & Logistics Master’s degree program?
Livingston: My previous education has been a great contributor to my career success so far, and I’m confident the opportunities provided through the SCTL program will help me achieve my goals for the next stage of my career. I live in Seattle so when I was researching programs related to transportation and logistics, the SCTL program was my first choice. I was impressed by the faculty, curriculum, and networking opportunities through the program at the University of Washington.
SCTL: What made you decide to pursue a Master’s degree?
Livingston: My earlier degrees are related to my current occupation as a member of the industry media. I believe the SCTL program will give me a grounding in logistics that will help me launch a new career within the industry I currently cover as a reporter.
SCTL: What are you looking forward to as you get ready to start the program?
Livingston: One of the perks of my current career is the opportunities I’ve had to tour logistics facilities, so I’m excited about the autumn course on Facility Design & Operations Management. Given the situation we’re seeing play out in today’s supply chains, I’m also looking forward to the course on External Supply Chain Transportation Risks.
SCTL: What do you like about working in the supply chain industry?
Livingston: Working as an airfreight reporter has taught me that there is never a boring day in logistics! The past year-plus of covering airfreight during the pandemic has convinced me that global supply chains are in a state of upheaval and transportation generally will need to adapt to the changes ahead. It’s an exciting field and I want to be more directly involved in its future.
SCTL: Who influenced your career path?
Livingston: My colleagues, current and former, on Air Cargo World and Cargo Facts introduced me to the worlds of aviation and logistics. Their passion for the industry and the people working in it helped me develop my interest in transportation, and they challenge me to keep learning more every day.
